HOW MUCH DO INDOOR FIBERGLASS POOLS COST?

This is a great question and one that we have been getting alot lately so we thought it was time to update this article to reflect current pricing for 2025.

INDOOR POOLS ARE EXPENSIVE!

We are not going to sugar coat this one, indoor pools of any type are expensive. Its not so much the pool thats expensive, its the room that goes around it and all that goes into it. Below we will break down the different components of an indoor pool project and provide rough cost numbers for each portion so you have a realistic look at the cost of an indoor fiberglass pool.

INDOOR FIBERGLASS POOL COSTS

To start out with indoor fiberglass pool project take quite a bit more work and material to complete than a traditional outdoor pool installation. As of right now the average fiberglass pool costs $90-$120,000.00 to install outdoors. On average its $15,000.00 to $20,000.00 more to install a fiberglass pool indoors versus outdoors. That seems crazy, right! Well lets break down why, so it makes sense.

Indoor Fiberglass Pools need to be backfilled in engineered lifts with the use of a conveyor truck

BACKFILL AND COMPACTED LIFTS

A traditional outdoor pool installation is over dug by 12" on each side of the pool. This empty space typically requires only a few loads of stone to backfill properly. With an Indoor Fiberglass Pool Installation we are typically installing 15 to 20 truck loads of stone backfill inside the indoor pool foundation and the pool wall. To do this properly we need to do this in lifts, which means we add several inches of clean stone around the pool, then use a large compactor to compact that lift. We then add more, compact and repeat all while filling the pool at the same rate to keep the pool walls straight. This requirement is 4 to five times the amount of clean stone than an outdoor pool installation requires. It also takes hours of raking and compacting to properly backfill the room. In most cases the use of a conveyor is needed to backfill the pool room since a machine will be unable to drive over the wall to spread the material. This adds a considerable cost to the project as well. The process of backfilling, compacting and the use of a conveyor to complete the task will add $10 to $15,000.00 to the project by itself.

VENTING FOR A POOL HEATER

An indoor application of a natural gas pool heater will require a clean air intake line and a properly sized vent for the heaters exhaust. This can add $2-$3,000.00 or more to the cost of an indoor pool project.

POOL ENCLOSURE

Thats about it for the additional costs for the pool side of things, now we need to dive into the enclosure portion of the project. Enclosing a swimming pool indoors isn't as simple as just putting a building around the pool and call it a day. Great care needs to be taken to address deck drainage, slip resistant flooring, window location, interior finishes, lighting and the most important aspect is the HVAC system for the pool room. These days adding an enclosure to a pool will run in the $250,000.00 range. Likely higher based on the size of the pool and customizations desired by the client.

Desert Aire Dehumidification Systems

MAKE OR BREAK

The most critical component to an indoor pool project is not the pool nor the building but the HVAC System. An HVAC system for an indoor pool room can cost upwards of $60,000.00. The reason is that a properly installed system is required that will wash fresh dry air throughout the pool room, over windows, walls ceilings and other surfaces to reduce the likely hood of condensation build up. The room temperature, pool temperature and room humidity are all keys that need to be factored in while correctly designing an hvac system that works. If your hvac system is not set up correctly you will likely experience interior finish damage that will likely include mold. This is a problem no one wants and is costly to repair.

BREAK IT DOWN

Lets be crystal clear here. These are rough numbers and to get an accurate price for your indoor fiberglass pool project you will need to contact a pool builder and an architect or home builder. The numbers we are providing are just ballpark numbers we have seen from projects we have worked on recently and may vary based on your location.

APPROXIMATE COST

Indoor Fiberglass Pool: $120,000.00

Pool Enclosure: $350,000.00

Total: $470,000.00

STICKER SHOCK

As you can see Indoor Fiberglass Pools are not cheap and is something the average family just cant afford. As nice as they are to have it is just too much for most people to justify the cost. However a traditional outdoor pool can be just as nice and will come in for a fraction of the price.

MORAL OF THE STORY

While Indoor Fiberglass Pools are great they just arent for everybody and do take quite a bit more time and energy to put together. If an indoor fiberglass pool is something you are looking for be prepared to pay a premium, but the ability to use your pool in the middle of January in Wisconsin could be worth it!
